I have decided to follow up on bringing back the afternoon tea.  So, firstly we need to understand the different terminology of the afternoon tea set if we are to do this correctly.  I do not need a smacked hand from all the purists out there, I get enough here!
LOW TEA: (I had never heard of this one!)  This is what we normally call afternoon tea.

  • It is served in nice hotels, and is definitely a treat.
  • The tea is steeped correctly, NO TEA BAG IN SIGHT.
  • Served on low tables besides lounge chairs - hence LOW TEA
  • Usually served on a tray or cart, rather than at the table.
  • Can be very expensive, but can be achieved at home with little effort or expenditure.
  • Americans frequently call this high tea which is incorrect.
HIGH TEA: (aka meat tea)

  • a meal served when family home from work or school.
  • more of a dinner
  • may have meat dishes, along with tea and sweets.
LIGHT TEA:

  • Lighter version of afternoon tea with scones, sweets and choice of tea.
FULL TEA:

  • 4 course menu with finger sandwiches, scones, sweets, & dessert.
  • Choice of tea.
  • Sandwiches are what separate this from light tea

Here is a Japanese blessing about tea to encourage you to persevere with following through on serving afternoon tea to someone you love soon:

Tea has the blessing of all deities.
Tea promotes filial piety.
Tea drives away evil spirits.
Tea banishes drowsiness.
Tea keeps the five internal organs in harmony.
Tea wards of disease.
Tea strengthens friendship,
Tea disciplines body & mind.
Have just had my great niece here for 20 minutes and in that time I had a play cup of tea and a coffee.  Both in a plastic tea set (no fluid) and both cup and saucer.  Little children love playing with a tea set and love a tea party.  Babycinos are now very popular.  By encouraging our children to play , tea parties will always be a part of our lives.
